Wax of the Day: Fortune Cookie Soap - Vivid

Saturday, June 27, 2015

Today, I am melting Vivid from Fortune Cookie Soap.  I picked this one up from the company's website.  They usually retail for $2.00 each.

Official Scent Description:  Some people say it smells like Hawaiian fruit punch, others say it smells like a fruity cocktail! Whatever it is, it's an addicting sugary sweet love spell!

So, how'd this one do?

Initial Thoughts:

This is the 2nd melt that I have tried from this company.  The first one (Polyjuice Potion) was beyond disappointing despite having quite a few reviews making some pretty big claims to the "amazing" performance.

I had melted that last one in a Glade warmer in my living room.  So, I thought I would try this one in the Scentsationals bulb warmer in a much smaller space.  (My bedroom is very tiny.)

So, I am hoping it does much better for me.  I'm especially hoping because I have quite a few more tarts from this company to melt.  Ugh,  Haha.

Cold Impression:

It definitely smells sweet.  It reminds me of a candy or gum that I used to have back in the 90s, but I can't place it.  It smells pretty awesome: artificially fruity and sickly sweet with a little kick.

Performance and Stats:

What:  1/2 the tart (.6oz of wax)

How:  Scentsationals warmer

Where:  Bedroom (small, about 6' x 8')

Duration:  3hours (3:30pm - 6:30pm)

This one started off with a good medium throw with a scent that was true to cold.  I was so happy, because it was already better than the last tart I had tried from FCS.  It filled up my tiny room quite well, but it didn't spread out beyond it at all.

It faded significantly after about 2 hours.  I had to be within about 3 feet to get any scent.  By the 3 hour mark, the scent was gone.

I did remelt it this morning. I got a little bit of fragrance that went out a couple feet from the warmer.  It went away again after about an hour.

Final Thoughts:

I keep forever having hope for these, because 95% of the reviews I have seen for them are saying how they are absolutely amazing with a great throw, able to be reheated several times, etc.  I just haven't experienced that with these yet.

Like I said above, I do have several other tarts from this brand still to melt.  So, we shall see if I have a different experience with any of that wax.  As it stands right now, I would not repurchase wax melts from this brand again.  I still live for their cuticle butter, though.

*All opinions are my own and reflect my personal experience with this particular melt.

*Not sponsored in any way.  I paid for this with my own money and all that jazz.  I did have a coupon code from my Fortune Subscription box, but the shipping fee more than made up for that.  Haha! :)

Yankee Semi Annual (SAS) Candle Haul: Epic $3.33 Large Jar Glitch

Thursday, June 25, 2015

The planets aligned, the temperature was just right, and the creek was at just the perfect level for the glitch to end all glitches to happen.

I still can't even believe it! AHHH!

So, before I list the goodies that I was able to order, I have to talk a little bit about how this came to be.

It was a normal Tuesday:  cats were snoring,  chores weren't getting done, and lots of coffee was being consumed.

I was messaging with Beth, a fellow vlogger and wax blogger (links will also be below), and exchanging deal information about the many present and wallet-crushing Semi-Annual sales.  She was on the Yankee Candle site looking to see what deals were to be had that day since they like to randomly add things to the 75% off section and such.

Then...a random miracle appears...

She was telling me that she added some large jars to her cart, and it was showing stupidly large discounts.  I'm a bit slow on the uptake sometimes, but I eventually headed over there to check it out as well.  I already had a bunch of large candles sitting in my cart from the day before.  So, I refreshed and...

Sure enough, my cart went from like $250 to about $50.  WHAT?! They were showing up as $3.33 each...for large jars.  Again, I say WHAT?!

The best we could figure was that someone somewhere goofed the candle size for the 3 for $10 sale.  It was supposed to be the small jars that were that price.

So, we both put in orders.  I, myself, ordered 17 items.  We pretty much assumed that Yankee Candle would cancel the order.  It is their right to do so and all.

For the next 48 hours, I stalked my order status and paypal account forever thinking it was going to get cancelled.  But, no!  Yankee Candle actually honored it and even shipped it 2-day legit FedEx.  I am floored and very thankful.

Girl Scouts:  Thin Mints (Not Pictured)

*Official Scent Description: the delicious aroma of sweet chocolate and cool mint reminiscent of these classic goodies

This one is not pictured because I gave it to my older brother for his birthday.  It really did smell like chocolate and mint on cold.

Girl Scouts:  Coconut Caramel Stripes

Official Scent Description: Almost good enough to eat. . . a tantalizing fragrance of sugary caramel, warm chocolate and fresh coconut

This one definitely has the sweet caramel and coconut notes to it.  To my nose, it is a more artificial coconut like you would find in a lotion instead of a food.

Vanilla Chai

Official Scent Description: The perfect accompaniment to "me" time, this is a supremely satisfyingly rich and spicy recipe of ginger, cinnamon and vanilla. Just as brewing a cup of tea, slows us down and relaxes us, so do this Indian and flavor-inspired fragrance. Great spice notes, really perky ginger, and sweet cinnamon make for a hearty scent perfect for cozying up at home on a chilly night.

This is such a rich warm chai scent.  This isn't the light kind that comes in discount tea bags.  This is like the chai you would get from a high-end cafe.  Just divine smelling!

Vanilla Lime (22oz Jar and 2 Wick Large Tumbler)

Official Scent Description: Smooth and refreshing - the creamy richness of vanilla with sweet cane sugar and a zesty lime twist.

I actually got the wax tart of this in my first Yankee haul, and I just fell in love with it.  It is a warm vanilla infused with lime.  Yum!

I have been burning the large jar of this for about 30 hours, and it isn't giving me any throw yet.  I hope it gets with it.

Official Scent Description: Naturally clean and relaxing. . . fresh, slightly moist air with hints of exotic flowers and greenery. We've brought back one of your treasured fragrances from the past for a limited time.

This has a fresh, almost soap like quality to it.  Very interesting.

Fluffy Towels

Official Scent Description: The fresh scent of clean towels warm from the dryer with notes of lemon, apple, lavender and lily.

This is fresh linen or laundry type smell.  Think of a bounce dryer sheet but fancier.

Fruit Fusion

Official Scent Description: Summer-licious . . . berries, orange and lime make this sunny fruit blend refreshingly tart and sweet.

Orange zest!  Fresh citrus goodness!

Beautiful Day

Official Scent Description: Life is good with this happily enchanting mix of sunny fruits, pretty flowers and spicy herbs.

This is a floral with a lot of green in it.  It reminds me of a lotion I've used in the past.  I usually don't like florals at all, but I'm liking this.

Cookies and Cream

Official Scent Description: Delicious cookie dreams with the scent of creamy, buttery-rich vanilla icing.

I was expecting a Oreo in vanilla ice cream type of scent.  It is nothing like that at all.  It smells like the toasty and crunchy edges of a sugar cookie that you've dipped in a fancy sweetened homemade whipped cream.  I'm warming up to it.

Official Scent Description: A beautiful blend . . . the heady perfume of delicate rose blossoms intertwined with spicy green herbs.

This smells just like the name.  It smell like green grass and fresh flowers balanced together.

Orange Dreamsicle

Official Scent Description: A favorite childhood summer treat you never outgrow . . . a cool blend of orange and vanilla ice cream.

This one smells pretty true to its name.  It is very strong with orange on cold.

Fresh Mint

Official Scent Description: A stirring sensation . . . the cool, peppery zing of green mint leaves fresh from the garden.

This is probably one of the best mints I've ever come across.  It is dead on mint that is still growing in the garden.  Not dried herb mint.  Not peppermint, Not menthol.  Straight up fresh in the garden mint.

Hazelnut Coffee

Official Scent Description: A full-bodied blend of java suffused with macadamia nut, vanilla, and cocoa bean.

I get straight up coffee but not any hazelnut.  Maybe it will come out once burned.  It is very nice.

Beach Wood

Official Scent Description: Seasoned by the elements. . . this modern blend of vetiver, salt air and driftwood creates an intriguing fragrance.

This smells like a unisex soap or mist that learns a little to the masculine side.  It will be interesting.

Girl Scouts:  Chocolate Peanut Butter

Official Scent Description: Everyone's favorite. . . a creamy combination of sweet chocolate and roasted peanuts tickles the nose.

This smells like a Reese cup.  Yes!

Julie and Julia by Julie Powell

Wednesday, June 24, 2015

You have Julie.  She's a 29 year old at a seemingly dead end point in her life of which she can't make any sense.  So, she throws herself into learning how to cook and daily blogging--something very laborious, routine, and highly structured--to see if she can once again find some meaning in her life over the course of a year and the 524 recipes included in Mastering the Art of French Cooking

:Short Thought:
All the teasers of this book promise a chronicle of the journey this woman takes to find herself through her reignited love of cooking.  That couldn't be further from the truth.  The food really takes a back seat to the author's overall distaste for her life.

This wouldn't be that bad if Julie was even somewhat likable. There are some short bursts that are enjoyable.  For the most part, I had to force myself to finish it.

:Expanded Thoughts:
[Contains Some Spoilers]
I had seen the movie based on this book by the same name a few years ago and really enjoyed it.  So when I saw this book at my local Dollar Tree, I just couldn't pass it up.

First, let me just say, that this book is nothing like the movie.  It doesn't have the same tone, the same glorious tidbits of Julia's journey to make her famous cookbook, or even the love of food.  The book focuses much less on the food and more on Julie and her environment, her relationships, and her often unapologetically strong and often problematic musings.

I started off very intrigued and almost refreshed by Julie and her brash manner.  The first story she shares is of when she sold her eggs for money which I found to be a kick right out of the gate.  She also isn't afraid to give her opinions or lace her thoughts with profanity.  While I didn't agree with most of what she shared, I did start off liking it much better than the flat, overly agreeable female lead that is so often present in books. Unfortunately, what I initially read as dashes of self-deprecation, snark, and sarcasm quickly turned into a facade for a whiny and self-centered brat.

I thought I was going to be reading about this woman finding a love of cooking, but it turns out that she didn't even really like cooking.  In fact, her kitchen was in such filth and disarray that she tells of maggots being in it.  She also complains of all the weight she was gaining from eating the rich food from the recipes she was completing and how it was ruining her sex life.  She also didn't describe any of the glorious dishes in a manner that was remotely appetizing as one would expect from a foodie.  For a book supposedly about cooking, the reader is left with nothing but a bad taste.

I really wanted to like this book.  I really did.  The premise hit a cord with me.  I went through something very similar a few years ago and again more recently.  Of course, I didn't achieve one percent of the success of this author in my pursuits either financially or personally, but I could relate to it in a big way.

Unfortunately, the story never really went anywhere and the scenes were very choppy and all over the place chronologically.  Even the little fantasy tidbits about Julia Child and her husband, that were so amazing and integral to the movie, were so bland and seemingly out of place.  While I understand that this was adapted from her blog, the structure of it was just unpleasant to read.

Julie starts off as quite a despicable person who is full of herself, judgmental, and overly dramatic.  There are a few moments where you get to see a different Julie, such as, when she finds out that Julia Child hates her blog or the very last scene after she receives the call about Julia's passing.  There is even a scene or two where I found her funny amongst the many other scenes that were ruined by severely problematic language.  In the end, it seems that she is very much the same despicable person just with a few more cooking skills under her belt.

:Additional Notes:
This is a stand alone novel.

Dollar Tree Haul: Book Nerd Paradise

This girl hit the book treasure trove at Dollar Tree recently.  Here are the covers, quick teasers, and links to the Amazon pages in case you come across these at your store.

The Andalucian Friend by Alexander Soderberg

I just had to pick this one up after the jacket said that fans of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo would like it.

From what I can gather from skimming the jacket is that it's basically about a lady who gets charmed by a handsome, dapper guy.  The guy, however, turns out to be involved in a pretty shady organization.  So, her life gets turned upside down.

[Amazon Page]

Vampirates: Black Heart by Justin Somper

I honestly bought this one for the title.  I mean, Vampire Pirates? Yes!

I didn't realize that this was book 4 until after I bought it, though.  Hopefully, it will work as a stand alone novel as well.

[Amazon Page]

The Technologists by Matthew Pearl

This seems to be about the struggles that students of the Ivy League colleges face post-Civil War era.  I think there may even be a murder mystery or two thrown in the mix.

[Amazon Page]

The Mirrored World by Debra Dean

I almost didn't pick this one up, because it is a bit thinner than books I usually read.  It sounded so interesting on the jacket, and the cover was just gorgeous.

It seems to be about a girl in Russia that falls in love with a soldier, and they both disappear.  Years later, she comes back dressed as him.  She has on his uniform and has been living as him.  Interesting!

[Amazon Page]

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson

Apparently, this was named a best book of the year by Oprah Magazine.  Well...who knew?

Basically, the world is coming to an end as the rotation slows.  This concentrates on how it affects this girl in California from what I can gather and her environment, the people around, etc.

[Amazon Page]

Making Records: The Scenes Behind the Music by Phil Ramone

Being the music nerd I am, I just had to pick this one up.  I mean, who doesn't want to know some of the mechanics that happened to get artists', like Sinatra, Sting, and Madonna, albums to light?

[Amazon Page]

The Fear Index by Robert Harris

This is another I bought for the cover.  Haha!  It does seem interesting for the teaser jacket.

From what I can gather, it has themes like big brother government and artificial intelligence.  It seems like it could be a really good thriller.

[Amazon Page]

Rizzo's Fire by Lou Manfredo

This one seems to be about a detective on the eve of his retirement that gets swept back up head first into the job by a big case.  I love CSI and Law & Order.  So, I couldn't resist.

[Amazon Page]

The Lost Prince by Selden Edwards

The cover on this one is gorgeous.  Yes, I can be superficial with books.  Haha!

From what I can gather, it is basically about a woman who marries into the privileged life and finds that it isn't all it's cracked up to be.

[Amazon Page]

The Strong Women by Marie Ndiaye

This seems to be a series of short stories about challenges faced by several women in Senegal and France.

[Amazon Page]

The River of No Return by Bee Ridgeway

From what the jacket says, this seems to be a bit of a fantasy or paranormal romance.  This man basically dies in London and wakes up decades later, in present time.  There is also mention of a over-lording force called the Guild that may be behind it, as well as, a woman he left back in time.  Seems really interesting.

[Amazon Page]

Pure by Julianna Baggott

This one seems like a dystopian fantasy centered around a girl that has to become a soldier and the hardships she faces.

[Amazon Page]

Bleed For Me by Michael Robotham

This one sounded really interesting from the jacket.  There is basically a teenage girl that shows up on this person's doorstep covered in blood.  They try to figure out if something happened to her.  Or, if she did something to somebody else.

[Amazon Page]

Charlotte Au Chocolat by Charlotte Silver

I am not sure if this is fiction, autobiographical, or a combination of both.  Basically, this is about Charlotte's time growing up in her mother's restaurant and how it wasn't as glamorous as it would seem.

[Amazon Page]

The Book of Madness and Cures by Regina O' Melveny

This book is set in Venice more than 100 years ago.  It's about a woman who practices medicine, which is unheard of back then, and the struggles she faces.  I think there is an element of romance in there as well.

Tuesday, June 23, 2015

There is something about the ever approaching 4th of July holiday that get me in a nail art mood.  So, I decided to break out my basic hues and make a fun and easy 4th of July inspired nail art design.

This is very beginner friendly.

Just remember to have some fun with your polish.  It doesn't always have to take a long time or be absolutely perfect.

As always, with my nail art tutorials, no special tools are required.

Or watch on youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HacDLPkLqy0

I got the idea from some tile I saw at home depot.  I can't think of the name of the style, but it sure was pretty and out of my budget.  Haha!

Colors used in the design:
  • Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure - Red My Lips
  • Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - White On
  • Revlon Colorstay - Indigo Night
  • Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure - Hi Ho Silver

Candle Haul: McCall's Candles

This is a haul from quite awhile ago.  I still wanted to share it, because I don't see too many reviews or hauls out there for this company.

I wanted to try these candles out after a friend of mine asked me about them when she saw them at a sports and outdoor store.  So, I looked them up, fell in love with the packaging, and had to try some out.

I ordered all but 2 of these from their clearance section on their website.  They have 2 separate sections with things marked 50%-75% off.

Oops Section:  http://www.mccallscandles.com/Overstocks-Little-Mistakes/products/583/

Discontinued Section:  http://www.mccallscandles.com/Discontinued-Stuff/departments/582

So, let's start off with the 2 wick candles that I picked up:

Indulgence 18oz Double Wick

Make a Wish

Official Description:  Dreamy moments of sparkling lemons and creamy vanilla flourish with raspberries, strawberries and soft hints of tuberose, pink cyclamen, magnolia and patchouli.

Can we just take a moment and appreciate the fact that they included the scent description on the tag with it?  I love it already for this.  Yes!

I haven't burned this one yet, but it has a very nice earthy perfume type fragrance like a luxury body product.

Classic 16oz Double Wick

Blue Ribbon Banana Raisin

Official Description:  Warm bananas blended with soft, juicy tender raisins. A rich combination and an addicting dessert "flavor."

I haven't burned this one yet, but y'all...

I could get a spoon and eat out of this thing!  It smells dead on like banana raisin pudding or something.  It has a great balance of banana and raisin.  It's not that fake runt banana either!  It's dead on ripe, mushy banana and plump, baked raisins.

This is seriously one of the best food type scents I have ever smelled.  Yum!

Tomato Basil (Formerly Tomato Vine)

Official Description:  Walk through grassy fields of gardenia blossoms and jasmine petals to our fresh herb garden full of sweet basil and tall vines of rich red sun-ripened tomatoes.

I must admit that I bought this one, because I was just so dang curious.  I mean, tomato basil?  I had to know if it smelled like a jar of pasta sauce or something.  Haha!

It doesn't at all.  It's very nice and green.  This is not the scent of the tomato fruit but of the green parts of the tomato plant itself.  It smells just like our vegetable garden.  I'm very pleasantly surprised.

Root Beer Float (Formerly Jerry's Root Beer)

Official Description:  Ah, a warm summer day and a frosty mug with scoops of creamy vanilla ice cream and frothy foam soda bubbles will make you feel like a child again.  (Pssstt…”Jerry” of the Jerry’s Root Beer label was named for our very own “pops”, Jerry McCall)

I haven't burned this one yet either.  But...

I half expected fizzy bubbles to tickle my nose as I smelled this one.  No joke!  It smells dead on like root beer.  Where has this been all my life?  I hope it burns well.  Yes!

Mexican Coco

Official Description:  Sinfully rich, Mexican chocolate decadently collides with sensational notes of fresh cream, smooth butter, velvety milk chocolate and just a hint of spice.

This is one that I actually have burned as evidenced by the picture above.  (I couldn't resist!)   So, I can talk more at length about it.

First, on cold, this one smells like the most fancy of hot chocolate drinks.  It's like if you were hanging out with a billionaire at his villa in Swiss Alps, this would be the hot cocoa that his personal frou frou 5 star chef would serve you.  No powder packets here.  Yum!

It burns true to cold with a very strong throw.  I had this going in my kitchen and it filled more than half of the entire house with strong chocolate goodness.  My dad, who doesn't give a hill o' beans about candles and can't smell to save his life, was like, "It smells good in here!"

This is definitely one of the best throwing candles I have ever burned in my life.  It's also the best and most true to life chocolate fragranced ones I have ever come across ever.

To be fair, there are a couple cons.

My wicks were a little off center.  So, I was getting some soot on one side that I couldn't do anything about.

Also, I had something happened that I have never had happen to me every before with a candle. The last time I went to burn it, I had a lot of fragrance oil sitting on top of the remaining 20% or so of wax.  I didn't think anything of it and lit it anyway.  Big mistake!

It started putting off black smoke like crazy since I guess it was burning the oil.  I've never had that happen before.  So, I just blew it out and am going to melt the remaining wax in my warmer.

In conclusion, you bet your butt I would buy this one again in a heartbeat even though I did encounter a couple issues.  The throw was worth it to me.  Amazing.

I also picked up a couple 3-wicks as well:

12oz Triple Wick

Cherries Jubilee

Official Description:  Sweet cherries and its rich liqueur sauce are perfectly flambéed at McCall's!

These 3-wick ones don't come with the metal lid.  They come with a very heavy duty plastic dust cover.

I haven't burnt this one yet, but it smells just like cooked cherries.  Not artificial lollipop cherry.  Straight up, went in your backyard and picked 'em, cherries.

Laura's Lemon Loaf

Official Description:  Look what Aunt Laura is baking today. . . her famous cream-cheese filled lemon bread. A tart lemon fragrance with a touch of poundcake makes this candle a fresh, yummy delight.  (Pssstt…Yes, there really is an Aunt Laura and she owns Laura’s Loaves and Goodies in La Habra, CA!)

I have been on a bakery lemon kick here lately.  So, I had to see what this brand's was like.

I haven't burnt it yet, but I am impressed on cold.  It is straight up, true to life, lemon pound cake.  I mean...you get the sweet, sugary lemon, but you also get the pound cake smell coming through.  I cannot wait to burn it.  It smell so delicious.

Additional Notes:

I am so impressed with the food scents that I got.  These are seriously the best, true to life, ones that I have ever experienced.  They smell like the real thing and not an artificial imitation.

I will have a better opinion on the brand and whatnot after I burn more of these candle.  So far, I am thinking I may have a new favorite wax brand.  I'm over the moon with these at the moment.

We shall see...

My Weekly Photos: 6/14 - 6/20/15 (And Vlog #25)

Monday, June 22, 2015

I'm slowly getting back into doing this series since I got my domain back.  (YAY!)  I did manage to snag a few nice shots of some of our new flowers and a judgmental kitten.

First, I am so excited that my dad's orange day lilies are finally blooming!

Only about a quarter of them are open at the moment, but I figured that I better get some shots while I could.  You never know when a rain storm may beat them up or a cat that takes a notion to be extra mean.

Here are some of the newer lilies to our yard.  My dad hasn't done much with them yest except put them in the ground for safe keeping.  Most of them are still closed as well.  I think they are all supposed to be different colors.  I shall keep an eye on them to see.

The marigolds are shaping up.  They ought to be as much as we are having to water them.  Stand alone concrete planters in 95+ degree heat with next to no rain is zero fun.

We also got some good tomatoes coming.  My cat nip also doing well as long as I water it twice a day.

These kittens are pert near impossible to catch in a shot with my equipment.  They are just fast little boogers!

Somehow, I got lucky and got this one.  Shoot, they learn that look from a young age, don't they?  It's nothing but contempt, judgment, and general apathy.  Cats, man.  Cats.

Wax of the Day: Scentsationals - Black Pepper & Rosemary

Saturday, June 20, 2015

Today, I melted Black Pepper and Rosemary from Scentsationals.  I picked this up at Walmart on clearance for $1.00 a little while back.  These usually run $2 each.

Official Scent Description:  Aromatic Mediterranean blend

So, how did this one do?

Initial Thoughts:

Scentsationals are usually always a hit for me.  So, I wasn't too worried.  They are one of my go to wax brands especially for the price.

Cold Impression:

It smells nothing like rosemary or black pepper.  Nothing!  It smells like a cheap after-shave or even like a "sea-type" shave gel scent.  Very man product smelling.

What:  2 cubes (about 0.85oz)

How:  Glade Warmer

Duration:  3pm - 6:30pm

This one started off pretty strong.  It almost gave me a headache. It stayed at that level for about 30 minutes.

It then had a medium throw for another hour and a half before it quickly faded.

At the 3 and a half hour mark, you had to be within inches of it to get anything.

Final Thoughts:

This one was definitely not my favorite and I wouldn't re-buy it.  It performed okay, but the scent is just not my style at all.  The consensus in the house is that it smells like "generic after shave."  Haha!

Despite having black pepper in the title, I didn't get any hint of spice at all from it.  It was more a clean, sea scent.  There was definitely no rosemary in it.  I grow rosemary.  Not even close.

Not sponsored.  I actually braved Walmart on a Saturday to buy this one.  You're welcome.

Nails of the Day: Revlon Bohemian, Wet N Wild It's a Winterful Life

Friday, June 19, 2015

I had actually been on the hunt for Bohemian from Revlon again ever since I saw it in passing at Walgreens awhile back.  I was always kicking myself for not picking it up.

Lo and behold, the polish fairies blessed me and I found it for only one dollar in a Walmart clearance bin a month back.  Oh yes!

I also picked up Wet n Wild Mega Rocks in It's a Winterful Life shortly afterwards in a clearance bin at Walgreens.  (Does anyone ever pay full price for polish?  I try not ever to for sure.)

I think they look so good together.  The Revlon has a fantastic wear time, but the Wet n Wild, as with most chunky glitters, only lasts about 2 to 3 days.  I still love them both.

Ashland: Patchouli Sage

Thursday, June 18, 2015

Today, I'm reviewing Patchouli Sage from Ashland.  I am doing this review after burning the entire candle.

Official Scent Description: (couldn't find one)

Initial Thoughts:

This is my first ever candle from this brand.  As I understand it, they are usually sold at Michael's craft stores.  We don't have any of those stores near us.  So, I was really happy to get to try one and have no preconceived notions as to how it's going to do.

Cold Impression:

It has a very pleasant earthy scent.  It is very nice, but I don't get any notes of patchouli or sage specifically.

Performance and Stats:

What: 17oz single wick

Where: Local Store called Hammer's

Price:  $4.88 (Retail: about $6)

Duration: 95 hours (stopped before completely gone, could have probably gotten 100)

I trimmed the wick to about a quarter of an inch before each burning.  I tried to go to an eighth of an inch, but I found that was too short for this particular candle.

I also burned this one for long periods of time of 8+ hours.  I didn't find that the flame got too high.  So, I didn't have to blow it out inbetween to trim the wick.

I hardly got any sooting until the last couple hours that I burned it, and then it was sooting quite a bit.

I didn't get any scent throw from this candle except very briefly around the 90 hour mark.

Final Thoughts:

While the burn on this one was great, my main criteria for a good candle is scent throw.  So, this one was quite disappointing to me.

I would not repurchase this particular scent again despite loving it on cold sniff.  I might try another from this brand if I found it at the right buy price.

Dollar Tree Haul: Pure & Natural Shampoo and Solar Dancers

I have another Dollar Tree haul already.  Oh yes!  Good things happen when I venture forth into bigger cities.

Swinging Solar Dancers

I was so happy to score one of each of the new solar dancers.  They go so quickly at my store because of the retail arbitragers in my area.  They are happily swinging in my living room window.

Decorative Tape (Washi and Fashion Duct Tape)

My store finally got in some of the bright and cheerful washi tape that I have seen people haul for ages.  They had a lot more patterns, but none of them appealed to me.  And...to be honest, I don't need 9000 rolls of washi tape.  I want them, but I don't need them.

I also only picked up one roll of the Jot fashion duct tape.  I just wasn't sure of the quality, and the dispenser looked kind of difficult to use.  We shall see.

What's a Dollar Tree haul with out stickers?  A sad one.  A sad and boring one.

The red and white label are Dollar Tree brand, but the ones with buttons are Sandy Lion.  I wish I would have bought a couple more of those, because they are probably some frou frou stationary brand.  It would have made me feel special.  It's the small things, y'all, the small things.

Polaroid Address Labels

What a deal for a buck!  You get 240 of the return address label in white.  They also had the photo paper sheets.

Old El Paso Rice Microwave Bowl Meal

My dad really likes these meals.  Not only are they convenient, but they only have about 470 mg of salt for the whole bowl.  That is way less than other meals of this type that I've seen.

Decorative File Folders

I saw one of my friends, JoFaye, make some mini binder dividers out of some of these a couple weeks ago.  So, I knew I needed to be on the lookout for them.  Goodness knows that I am the slowest crafter in the universe, but some day I shall do it, too.  Yes!

2pk Fashion Pencil Pouches

These were just so fun and vibrant.  The zippers are pretty good quality, too.  I always check the zippers.  I have learned my lesson after many a crappy dollar store zipper.  Haha!

Patterned Storage Bin

I had been on the lookout for these since I had seen several other youtubers showing them in hauls.  My store had quite a lot, but I only picked up 3.  Why?

Because every other one had major flaws in the patterns.  They were either smudged, crooked, or in the wrong place altogether.

I accidentally picked up one with a flaw myself.  It's missing the pattern on one side.  It will do, though.  I'm not that picky...sometimes.

If you are in the market for these, be sure that you look them over very well.

Pure & Natural Rosemary and Mint - Shampoo and Conditioner

Oh boy, here we go.  I bought another product that everyone was raving about and claiming that it works miracles.  I just had to test it despite going through a lot of duds this very same way.  Glutton for punishment: party of one.

I have used it once so far, and I do have to say...

It the best shampoo and conditioner that I have purchased from Dollar Tree.  It's not too bad, but it's not for my hair.  It just isn't moisturizing enough for my really dry hair.  It didn't leave me with straw head or anything, but my frizzies and waves are out to play!

The shampoo smells nice, but it is really runny.  Really runny.  So, don't be a dumb butt like me and turn the tube all the way vertical to squeeze some out.  It is barely thicker than water.  Surprisingly, it lathers up amazingly well.  I really enjoyed it.  I did have to use quite a lot since it was so thin.  Only drawback that I can name.

The conditioner was thick and creamy.  The scent wasn't as strong as it is in the shampoo.  I did need to use quite a bit of the conditioner, because my hair just kept soaking it up.  It did okay, but it wasn't near moisturizing enough for my dry hair.  I could see it maybe doing well for someone with oily hair.  It would provide moisture but not too much.

I will continue to use these until they are gone.  I will add a leave in conditioner afterwards from on, though.

In short, I personally wouldn't repurchase these, but I could see them working well for others.

Natural White Sensitive Toothpaste

We have bought this quite a few times.  My dad can only use sensitive toothpaste.  He used to buy a tube for $14 at the dentist.  Then, we started buying him Pronamel from Sensodyne.  The last few times we've been getting him this, and it seems to be working great.

Home Store Moisture Trap

This is a staple in our house.  We always have 2 going in the bathroom.  It takes a few days for you to see any trapped moisture, but they will eventually get completely full.  They totally helped a lot with the moisture problem in our bathroom.

LA Totally Awesome Cleaner

This is another staple in our house.  It is an awesome degreaser.  We've been buying it for years.

I have to make a note.  This is a concentrated cleaner.  You can really stretch your money if you dilute it in a ratio according to the job for which you are using it.  You will also save your hands and possibly a surface in your house.  I see everyone using this stuff straight for everything.  And...I cringe.  I cringe hard.

4pk Utility Tweezers

These were in the hardware and workshop section of the store.  I thought they would be good for crafts or nail art.  They have similar tweezers in the beauty section, but they are all separate.

Wax of the Day: Scentsationals - Bali Shores

Tuesday, June 16, 2015

I'm melting Bali Shores from Scentsationals today.  You can usually find Scentsationals wax tarts for $2 at Walmart or online.

Official Scent Description:  Serene breezes and soothing tides

So how'd it do?

Initial Thoughts:

I always have good luck with this brand of wax melts.  So, I wasn't too worried.  They are almost always a safe bet especially for the price point.

Cold Impression:

It is quite stout.  I definitely am getting a "sea-type" or beachy fragrance.

It has a clean note (think fresh soap), but there is also some floral in there.  It makes it almost smell like a perfume--a clean, floral perfume.

What: 2 cubes (approx .85oz)

How:  Glade warmer

Duration:  6pm - 9:30pm

Final Thoughts:

Wow, this started off STRONG!  I seriously thought I was going to have to open a window or something.  I always use two cubes with this brand, but I will only do one next time for sure.

It stayed very strong until it quickly faded at the 3.5 hour mark.  At that point, you could barely smell it.  I even went out side for a bit and came back in and couldn't pick up much.

It smelled like a floral, fresh perfume scent to me when melted.  (True to my impression on cold)  I had 2 other people in the house who both said it smelled like "exotic beach flowers" to them.  I didn't tell them the name of it or anything.  I found that interesting.

I received this wax melt in an awesome friend mail (or random act of kindness) from a fellow youtuber, Scents and Cents.  She does a lot of wax related videos and is actually one of the main reasons I got into melts at all.  Her channel:  https://www.youtube.com/user/LourdesBriseno

This didn't affect or bias my review in any way.

Swatch It Out: Random Polish #4

It's that time once again where I swatch random polishes from my nail polish collection and see if I have some winners, some duds, or some...meh.

Before I start, I do have to say that my nails are not in the best of shape at the moment.  I have had several breaks, tons of peeling, hangnails for days, and a just a whole lot of not fun nail happenings.

I wanted to go ahead and do this swatch it out, because I think it's important to see polish on problem nails as well.  It's not like I'm sponsored and trying to sell y'all on any of these anyway.  I just show you them as they are when I swatch them.

Pure Ice - Lacquered Lilacs

The above picture shows 2 coats without a top coat.

The formula on this one is quite good especially for the price point.  I have worn this one several times before with a top coat.  (Pure Ice Girl on the Run quick dry, funny enough).  I usually get close to a week out of it.

Honestly, my only complaint about this one is that you have to go into Walmart to get it.  Haha!

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel - B Girl

The above picture shows 3 coats with no top coat.

This is my first polish from this line.  I had been curious to try them for quite awhile, but the $10+ price tag always turned me off.

I love the color of it.  It's beautiful.  I don't like that it takes 3 coats to be opaque.  A polish at that price should not be more than 2 coats unless it's a topper in my opinion.

I also bought the top coat that goes with this line, and I didn't enjoy it.  It was quite thick, especially over 3 coats of polish, and I never could get it to fully dry.

So, this one is for sure the most disappointing of this bunch, but I'll be keeping it.  It's just so dang pretty.  Grrrr.

China Glaze - Reggae to Riches

The above picture shows 2 coats with no top coat.

Oh, how do I love thee?

This was one of the first China Glaze polishes that I ever bought, and it's still probably my favorite.  It is just gorgeous, and the formula is wonderful. Yes!

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure - Hi Ho Silver

The above pic shows 2 coats with no top coat.  And...the incorrect polish name. :/

This is one of my favorite metallic polishes ever.  It goes on very nicely, dries fast, and looks like you broke a freakin' old school thermometer and dipped your piggies in it.  (Don't ever do that, kids.)

I picked this one up at the last CVS semi-annual sticker sale, but I have been seeing this line of polishes showing up at Big Lots for only $1 each.  So, keep your eyes peeled for deals.

Revlon Colorstay - Indigo Night

This above picture shows 2 coats with no top coat.

I had to bring this polish back out, because it is my go-to blue for 4th of July nail art.  I just love it.  I can see the fireworks already.

I picked this one up at Big Lots for $1.50 last summer, but this line of polishes have been showing up at Dollar Tree recently.

Rimmel Salon Pro - Hip Hop

The above picture is 2 coats with no top coat.

Oh man...I can't believe I never swatched or wore this one before now.  It is beyond fabulous!  I seriously fell in love after I put it on.

My only complaint is with the packaging.  I find that the top is way too short and fat.  It can make it hard to maneuver your polish properly especially with the wide salon brush.

This one is definitely my surprise favorite of today's group.  It's the next polish in line to go on my phalanges.

Nicole by OPI - Carrie'd Away

The above picture shows 2 coats with no top coat.

This has been my go-to quick accent nail polish since I got it.  It covers completely in 2 coats and dries fast.  It also has a slightly textured finish that adds to it as well.  Love it!

I picked this one up at Kmart on clearance.  It seems the whole Carrie Underwood collection has been showing up discounted at various places.

Wax of the Day: Ava's Country Cupboard - Strawberry Marshmallow Twinkies

Saturday, June 13, 2015

Today, I melted Strawberry Marshmallow Twinkies from Ava's Country Cupboard.  I got this in a 2pk of 1oz grubby tarts straight from the owner's website.

Official Scent Description:  strawberry stuffed twinkies with ooey gooey marshmallows

Initial Thoughts:

This was my first order from this company.  I am also quite new to the world of vendor wax.  I was attracted to this company because of the ease of ordering and the good reviews I'd been hearing.

Cold Impression:

This is one of those that you just jump and giggle like a mischievous child when you smell it.  It smells just like a marshmallow-filled strawberry twinkie.  Yum!  I will say that the strawberry note is more of a flavor syrup than a fresh fruit.  It works really well in this combination.  Seriously, yum!!!

What:  1oz grubby tart (Pour Date: 3-8-15)

How:  Glade Warmer (Living Room)

Duration:  1pm - 6pm

Final Thoughts:

It smelled pretty much the same warm as it did cold.  I just loved it, and I am not usually a sweet or bakery fan at all.

The scents also stayed pretty consistent throughout until the last half hour when the vanilla really took over.  It was very nice.  The scent also reached out to my entire living room which is about 12ft x 12ft give or take a foot or so.

I will probably take the other tart, cut it in thirds, and melt it in my small bedroom warmer.  I want to keep it as long as possible and enjoy it.

The thing I really love is the easy ordering process.  Some of these vendors are ridiculously difficult to order from or they don't have their shipping rates clearly listed.  Ava's Country Cupboard has a website that you order from, a flat rate shipping (free over $25), a scent list, and a fast turn around time.

I would totally order from this vendor again when I am in the market for more wax.  I can't wait to melt the other tarts that I got with this order.  Yum!

Nails of the Day: Sally Hansen Miracle Gel B Girl

This is 3 coats of Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in B Girl

This is the first polish I have ever tried or owned from the Miracle Gel line.  I had high hopes especially since these retail for over $10 at my local CVS.

While the color is very gorgeous, I found it a bit sheer for my tastes.  At $10 a bottle, I shouldn't have to use 3 coats.

I did buy the gel top coat from this collection as well and tried it with this polish.  I am not a fan of it after using it once.  I'll definitely give another try to give it a fair shot, but it was thick, goopy, and took forever to dry.  I had dents in my manicure even hours later.

I just never have any luck with no light gel polishes.  I will give it another go.  It may work better on the next run, but I would never pay retail for these polishes.  I would buy an OPI, Orly, or China Glaze first and still have a couple bucks for a drink.

Our Own Candle Company: Lemon Pound Cake

Wednesday, June 10, 2015

Today, I am reviewing Lemon Pound Cake from Our Own Candle Company.  I am doing this review after burning the entire candle.

Official Scent Description:  A wonderful candle for the springtime, this candle's name says it all. Smells like a warm lemon poundcake just popped out of the oven!

Initial Thoughts

This is my first ever candle with this company.  I have always seen it at my local store, but I never purchased.  So, I don't have any thoughts one way or another about how it's going to do.

Cold Impression:

Dead on sweet bakery lemon.  Yum!

Performance and Stats:

What:  13oz single wick jar candle

Where:  Local Store called Hammer's

Price: $4.88 (Retail: $7.99)

Duration:  I got 92 burning hours (stopped before completely gone)

I did trim the wick down to an eighth of an inch before each burning.  I also burned this one for long periods of time of 8+ hours each time.

The throw was great with the exception of the first and last couple hours of burn.  It filled up my dining room which is around 10'x10'.

Final Thoughts:

I am beyond impressed with this candle.  It had one of the best, most even burns I have seen in a candle that I can even remember.  There was hardly any soot, which is always of concern to me.  (Ain't nobody got time to hack up black stuff or scrub walls and celings.)

I was also really impressed with the burn time.  It gave me twice of what I get out of a Bath and Body Works candle with less wax.

I would totally purchase this one again.  I will also be smelling some of the other candles they have at my local store the next time I am there.

Dollar Tree Review: Sassy + Chic Nail Art Pens

Tuesday, June 9, 2015

This is a review, demo, and first impression of the Sassy + Chic 3N1 nail art pens from the Dollar Tree.

So, are they worth even a dollar?

Video (Demo, First Impression, Review)

Or watch on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5OmX2Y8mEA

Additional Thoughts:

Overall, these were way better than I expected, but I don't think they have any staying power.  I still want to try them over a polish that I know is really good to see how they would do.

The best part about these is their fun factor.  They were really fun to play around with and would make a great gift for someone just getting into nail art.  I could see this being a fun thing to do at a sleepover or something like that.

I didn't test the gems, beads, and etc.  They are just like all the others on the market.  So, I didn't see a point.

Would I ever buy anymore for myself?

I might buy them for some other people in my life, but I wouldn't buy them for me again to be completely honest.

Not sponsored.  I can only dream that Dollar Tree would call me.  :D

Wax Empties: Wax Melts

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

Here are the wax melts that I have melted up here lately.  I have vendor wax, as well as, store brand in this one.

Video With Reviews

Or watch on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C2iCauCbms

Products in order of appearance:

(Official Scent Descriptions Below Each)

Wicky Wicky Wax - Pumpkin Creme Brulee
  • fall bakery: A buttery creamy bouquet with a rich vanilla background and a wonderful hint of pumpkin.
Wicky Wicky Wax - Berry Pineapple Souffle
  • Couldn't find one for this exact scent
Wicky Wicky Wax - In the Summertime
  • Recapture your youth with this memory provoking fragrance. Includes notes of pineapple, strawberry, lime and bright lemon at the center of it all with a subtle creamy base to tone. Very Bright scent! PERFECT for summer or just for reminiscing.
    • Small Bundt Cake Tart, Pour Date: 10/14
    • Melted for 8 hours
    • It had a very strong throw and traveled throughout the entire house.  Very bright scent. It reminded me of the fruity flavored Sprite.
Vintage Chic Scents - Rosemary's Baby
  • If you think your neighbors might be a part of a cult, then this soothing lavender mint scent is for you.
    • 1.5oz scent shot, Pour Date: 12/1/13
    • Melted for 6 hours
    • At first, I couldn't pick up any mint, but it did come out and became the dominant note after a couple hours.  It wasn't a very strong throw, but it did travel to most of the rooms in my house.
Gracie Jo's Candles - Banana Nut Bread
  • Banana, walnuts, and bakery notes. Smells like the real thing.
    • Small Square Tart 0.9oz
    • Melted for 4.5hours
    • It started off really strong with a banana candy smell like Runts.  After about an hour, it started smelling like microwave popcorn to me.  I honestly thought someone had popped some in the house.  The throw stayed strong for a couple hours and then quickly faded into a light banana scent until it was completely gone.
Fortune Cookie Soap - Poly Juice Potion
  • Fragranced with an abundance of fresh oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, ripe melon, peaches and kiwi.....sprinkled with a touch of sugar.
    • Scent Shot 1.2oz
    • Melted for 3.5hours, then for 45min the next morning
    • This smells like sugary fruit punch on cold.  It started off really light and never got any better.  I had to be within inches of the melter to get anything.  I melted it again the next morning, because people claim you can remelt it several times and get a good throw.  I got nothing the next morning.  It was very disappointing.  I hope I just got a dud, because I have quite a few from this brand.

Swatch It Out: Random Polish #3

Tuesday, June 2, 2015

It's time for some more random swatches from my collection.  Video with the live swatches embedded below as well.

I got a good mix today ranging from 99 cents to 9 dollars.

Milani - Hot Orchid

One coater alert!!  Oh yes!  Haha!

This one goes on like a dream in just one coat.  I will say that you definitely need a good base and top coat with this one.  It looks fabulous when you put it on, but it will chip within hours by itself.  It does pretty well when sealed properly, though.

Revlon - Sultry

This one was surprisingly a favorite of mine out of this group.  The picture isn't showing the pink flash that the shimmers have when the light hits it.  Just yum!

Sinful Colors - Vintage

I picked this one up on a whim at Big Lots when I was in a buying mood.  I'm so glad I did, too!  It looks quite bland in the bottle, but it is so shiny and vibrant on the nail.  It has the look of velour when light hits it just right.  I can't wait to rock this in Fall.

Zoya - Leslie

This one is from Zoya's newest Delight Spring collection.  Just a dream!  Just a flippin' gorgeous dream!  This is one of my current favorites in my whole collection at the moment.  It is a pale lavender but the blue shimmer makes it extra special.

Wet n Wild - Heatwave

This has been one of my summer staples for over a year.  It is just a perfect hot watermelon orange-y red.  I just need to fix the brush on this particular polish, because it is pretty jacked up.

Revlon - Tropical Rain

I bought this for the bottle.  I mean, how can you resist that cute little thing?

Surprisingly, it wasn't that bad.  Every other scented polish that I've used has had a terrible formula.  This one is quite thin and tends to want to pool all over your nail, but it's quite manageable.

Wet n Wild - Kaleidoscope

This polish is not new to the Wild Shine line.  It was available in the older packaging as well.  This is my least favorite of today's bunch.  The formula was on the thick side, and it wouldn't dry even after 10 minutes.

It may have been incapable with the Revlon I put it over, but I'm not that happy with it.  I would probably sponge it on if I did it again.  Pretty though.
